Laparoscopic Surgery couldn’t be that safe.!

Well, let’s first understand what is a laparoscopic surgery and how a laparoscopic surgeon performs it?

Laparoscopic surgery is also referred to as “minimally invasive” surgery and this is what makes it safer than any traditional surgery.

It is a special technique for operating.

Though it’s not a recent advancement as this technique was earlier applied for gynecologic surgery and also for surgery on the gallbladder.

Considering it better and safer, its use has been stretched to surgery related to the intestine. Traditionally open surgeries were performed where a single incision used to be made. This incision is used to open the body part for operation.

However, in a laparoscopic surgery, a number of small incisions ranging from 0.5 – to 1cm are made by the surgeon. These incisions are called ports holding trocars which are tubular instruments.

These trocars are means through which an instrument and a camera are passed to the problem area inside the body.

These cameras are specially designed and are called a laparoscope. Also to get a working space and a proper view the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide.

Images, from the inside of the body, are transmitted to monitors with high-resolution displays in the operating room. The laparoscope transmits images from the abdominal cavity to high-resolution video monitors in the operating room. This way the laparoscopic surgeon performs surgery without opening the body part.

Although in a type of laparoscopic surgery called hand-assisted laparoscopy, the incisions made to create a port are larger, enough to insert a hand. As in some situations, the surgeon requires his hands inside to do his job successfully. Still, these hand-assisted laparoscopic surgeries create incisions smaller than that traditional open surgery require.

And there is a set procedure that the surgeon would first inspect for the conditions favoring laparoscopy through laparoscope being inserted from a port created near the belly button also called umbilicus. In case of inflammation or anything hindering a clear view, the incision can be enlarged.
