Is Open Inguinal Hernia Repair Safe for the Patients?

An inguinal hernia refers to the abdominal fat (a small loop of the small intestine that enters the inguinal canal, the tubular passage throughout the lower layers of the lower abdominal wall). These hernias may happen when the small intestine protrudes out through the weak point; the thin muscular wall which holds the abdominal organ will create the bulge.

However, this hernia typically develops in the groin region around the scrotum in men. It can happen in both men and women. Open Hernia repair is considered a safe treatment to get rid of hernia.

Common Reasons Why Inguinal Hernias Develop

Inguinal hernia may develop in men mostly by connective tissues degeneration of the small intestine and abdominal muscles. This causes weakening of the tissues and occurs when the hernia involves the fat, and the small intestine start sliding down through the weak tissue muscles in the groin.

Furthermore, some conditions can also increase the pressure in the intra-abdominal which may contribute to the hernia formation. These are as follows:

  • Heavy lifting
  • Obesity
  • Straining with the urination and defecation
  • Coughing
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Ventriculoperitoneal shunt
  • Peritoneal dialysis

The inguinal hernia affects males more than females. However, this condition can be corrected by open hernia repair. The treatment helps remove the hernia and prevent patients from further complications.

Open Hernia Repair Treatment

The treatment is often called herniorrhaphy, in which the person's abdomen region is numb with general anesthesia. A small incision is made on the groin region through which the hernia is moved back into the abdomen and reinforces muscle walls with various stitches.

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia and bariatric surgery can also treat the hernia condition. In this, a small incision is made in the lower abdomen region so that a laparoscope will be inserted with a tiny video camera. The surgeon will repair the hernia.

Bottom Line

Hernia can cause serious problems and can cause constant pain and discomfort. This is why it needs to be treated as soon as possible. Various surgeons use open hernia repair as it is safe and effective in repairing the hernia and relieving the patients.
